Vertical Dyadic Linkage Theory (VDL Theory)

Vertical Dyadic Linkage focus on identification of how leader develop one to one relationship with followers and create In-Group and Out-Group.


In-Group

Subordinate with strong social ties to leader. The relationship is more "People-Oriented". The characteristic are like follow:

  • People-oriented
  • High mutual trust
  • High exchange
  • High loyalty
  • Mutual influence


Out-Group

Subordinate with little or no social ties to leader. The relationship is more "Task-Oriented". The characteristic are like follow:

  • Task-oriented
  • Lack of trust
  • Low exchange
  • Low loyalty
  • Little or no influence


Leader-Member Exchange (LMX)

This theory define the quality of exchange relationship between leader and follower. The quality of leader-follower relationship is more predictive in productivity compare to trait and behavior of leader.


Stage of LMX

  1. Leader & Follower conduct themselves as stranger. Negotiating the relationship.
  2. Leader & Follower become acquainted. They refine their roles to develop mutual trust, loyalty and respect.
  3. Leader & Follower reach maturity. The have mutual commitment to organization.

Followers

A person who support and admire a particular person or set of ideas. There are 5 types of follower

  1. Alienated Follower
  2. Conformist Follower
  3. Passive Follower
  4. Effective Follower
  5. Pragmatic Follower


Effective Follower

Effective follower are follower who are courageous, responsible and proactive. They are good in critical thinking, decision making and problem solving


Delegation

Process of assigning the responsibility and authority for accomplishing an objective to subordinate. Benefit of delegation  include having more time for higher priority task, increase productivity, train and develop subordinate as well as reduce manager stress. Paperwork, routine tasks, technical matters, tasks with development potential and employees' problem can be delegate.
