Definition
Transformational Leadership is a leadership style where leader work with followers not to accomplish personal characteristic or follower reaction but create to vision to influence the group to change.
Transformational Leadership stimulate and inspire their followers to achieve extraordinary outcome and in the process develop their followers' to own leadership capacity. These leaders help the followers to grow and develop by responding to followers individual needs by empowering them and aligning the objectives and goals of the individual followers, the leader, the group and the larger organization (Bass & Riggio, 2006)
Transformational Models & Dimensions
- Vision - The leader must be able to communicate the vision to the follower.
- Inspirational Communication - The leader need to be able to inspire and motivate the follower.
- Supportive Leadership - The leader should concern about the needs of follower, improve the relationship.
- Intellectual Simulation - The leader should influence follower to be aware of the problem and encourage them to be creative in solving the problem
- Personal Recognition - The leader should acknowledge the effort of follower upon achievement of goal.
Strengths
- Transformational leader is able to create a vision for improvement and growth and motivate every follower to work together.
- Follower is more engaged and involve in the activity.
- Transformational leader is more willing to change and as the result will end up improving the productivity.
- Transformational leader can bring more ethical value to a organization as follower follow the step of the leader.
- Transformational leader with high communication skill can break the communication barrier in an organization.
- Transformational leadership give a lot of freedom to the follower and their skills and experience is involved in the activity.
Weaknesses
- Some follower need guide to work efficiently and transformational leadership is too conceptual and lacking detail.
- The constant involvement will put unnecessary stress on some follower.
- Transformational leadership can bring negative impact if the transformation is happen too frequently.
- Transformation leader sometime can mislead a group to a wrong path when the ideology of the leader is not in the right way.
- Transformation leader require a lot of meeting and feedback to keep the enthusiasm level high.
- Transformation leadership may bring negative impact on follower if the leader vision is not in-line with the followers.

Reed Hastings is the founder of Netflix. His leadership style is crowned as one of the best management style. He focus on total autonomy on his follower, even give his employees unlimited vacation time. With that, Netflix was a mail-order DVD service but now it has become a market-leading and a must have product in the world.
Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs is the co-founder of Apple. Under his leadership, he always challenge his team to think beyond the accomplished and pushed for even more. He is able to transform his organization with his charismatic and visionary guidance. Besides, the introduction of Apple iPhone, became a hot trend in the world even until now.
